Devil’s Slide Trail is probably the best way to experience Highway 1. It is a segment of this iconic route that has been bypassed by two tunnels and a bridge. It is now closed to traffic, but walking, hiking, biking, and leashed dogs are permitted.
What you need to know
- There are small parking areas were at each end of the closed highway.
- During the week is wonderfully empty. Weekend can get pretty busy. You may need to take a shuttle to the trailhead.
- There are bike racks, drinking fountains, restrooms, and pet waste stations.
- It’s hilly.
- BONUS: Just south of the south parking area, an unmarked trail leads a short distance along the highway and then out to the Devil’s Slide Bunker, one of the weirdest looking structures in the Bay Area.
