The Aterro do Flamengo is the biggest public open space in Rio. Early mornings and evenings is full with people working out; jogging, walking, biking, doing yoga, etc. On weekends it’s full of families and groups of friends picnicking and escaping the heat under the palm trees. The views across the Guanabara Bay of Niteroi and the Sierra are idyllic.
Unfortunately, the water is not recommended for swimming, but it’s a great place to watch the sunrise. And even though the sun sets in the “wrong” direction it is still a great place for a sunset – the glowing red light of the sunset reflecting the sugar loaf is breathtaking.
The park is open 24 hours but it’s rather unsafe after dark.
