Alp Scheidegg is the highest restaurant in canton Zurich at 1,200 meters above sea level. To get there during the summer it’s a beautiful hike through stunning landscape and incredible views all along the way. During winter, the mountain is covered in snow, so you probably have to drive almost to the top and walk the last few kilometers. Either way it’s worth it.
The view of the Alps and the lake of Zurich region is second to none.
What you need to know
- You can get there with public transit (of course! this is Switzerland). See details below.
- In the winter you are better off driving. You can drive all the way to the top, but you’ll miss out on part of the fun. Park at Felmis or Wolfsgrube and walk from there.
- It’s a pretty good bet to find clear skies even when its’ crappy weather in Zurich. Check out the live cam.
- It’s also a paraglading spot, so if you’re into that, bring your equipment.
Take the train from Rapperswil or Zurich (HB) main station via Rüti to Wald, or from Winterthur via Thurbenthal, Gibswil to Wald.
During summer you can hike from the Wald train station station. The hike is not for the faint of heart (13 km, 570m vertical climb). It takes 2-3 hours depending on the pace and leads first into the beautifully wooded, wild, romantic Sagenraintobel. From there you continue on the Josenberg up to the Alp Scheidegg where a spectacular sight awaits. The trails are marked yellow for you.
In the winter you are better off driving to the Felmis or Wolfsgrube parking lots and then walking from there. You could also request a taxi to pick you up from either parking lot, but you need to call 24 hours in advanced to request it (055 246 40 40).
